MTN MoMo

MTN MoMo is one of Africa's largest mobile money platforms — enabling money transfers, business payments, micro-loans, and insurance for people who have historically been excluded from formal financial services. Tshaks worked on backend systems and architectural design supporting the platform's financial services infrastructure.

The challenge

Financial infrastructure at this scale requires near-perfect reliability. Transactions must be atomic, idempotent, and auditable. The user base spans multiple countries with different regulatory environments, currencies, and connectivity conditions.

Our approach

Systems and data architecture work focused on reliability and correctness — ensuring transaction integrity, designing for eventual consistency across distributed services, and building service boundaries that could accommodate the complexity of multi-country financial operations.

The outcome

Contributed to backend architecture for a platform with over 10 million active users in a single market, operating across 20+ African countries.
